Slide 13: A view of deforested land above 2200 meters inside the Gishwati Forest Preserve that has been converted into a modern dairy-farm production area. These farms depend on exotic forage-crop species as well as exotic cattle breeds such as the Swiss Brown and Holstein cattle. This was part of a major World Bank funded project in the early 1980s to create an intensive modern dairy industry to help meet Rwanda's growing urban demand for milk and cheese products. The goal was to reduce dependence on importation of milk products from Kenya and Uganda. Image credit: Robert E. Ford, Westminster College of Salt Lake City, Utah |
