Slide 1: The location of the Overthrust Belt and Persian Gulf regions in
relation to major known world oil and natural gas reserves. A comparison of
the geology and geography of these two regions provides a useful mechanism for illustrating
some of the complexities of petroleum geology as well as oil economics, politics
and environmental management issues. It also will help to explain some of the
reasons why achieving "energy independence" is seemingly so difficult.
It will also help to illustrate some of the environmental, socioeconomic and technological
complexities that come with the finding, exploiting, processing, distribution and
consumption of fossil fuels. Credit: John Wiley and Sons, Inc. |
