Slide 16: An oil feeder line in Kuwait. Much larger pipelines cross the Arabian Peninsula from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea (see Slide 4); others go from Iraq to the Mediterranean and so on though some were closed during the Gulf War and yet remain unused. A major debate at present is over the choice of future pipeline routes for oil that is starting to flow from the Caspian Sea Region. Should it go through Russia, Armenia, Georgia or Iran? Political, economic, technical and military issues that are very complex will determine the route that will be chosen for these new pipelines yet to-be-built. Current routes through Russia, for instance the one that goes through Chechenya to Russia and then connects to Europe, has been either disrupted or threatened several times.
