Slide 8:  The USGS divides the world's major oil producing basins into provinces and smaller fields and plays (go to the USGS World Energy Project page).  Above is the map of oil provinces in the continental US.  The rest of this Virtual Tour will focus on the geology and economic/ecologic parameters of oil production in the Rocky Mountains and Northern Great Plains and Colorado Plateau/Great Basin region of Utah.  Though this is not the most important oil producing area in North America it is growing in importance-particularly because of its coal and gas resources.  And more important, it illustrates well many of the geological, ecological and socio-economic issues involved with energy policy and production in the US.
