Slide 12: Lake Natron in the Gregory Rift Valley (GRV) on the Tanzania/Kenya border. Lake Natron is a soda lake and one of the rift systems most unusual lakes. It is distinguished by its red color (from algae blooms) that can be seen distinctly from space. Note also the straight lineaments of the adjacent escarpments and mountains on either side of the graben in which the lake is located. The second image shows the location of several other extinct volcanoes in the southern rift region of Tanzania. Credit: Courtesy NASA. |
