Slide 16: Lava-blocked Lake Ruhondo as seen from the Buberuka Highlands in Ruhengeri Prefecture. Note the intensive agriculture on steep slopes. Some attempts at erosion control--contoured bunds--are also visible. The Buberuka Highlands are part of a much older geological formation; metamorphised schists and quartzites that were uplifed at various times in the past due to isostatic rebound. This created among other things, the large high-altitude drowned valley known as the Rugezi Swamp on the Mukungwa Watershed. See the geological map of the area as well as a profile diagram and other maps in the Graphics Gallery: topographic, ecozones, hydrographic, and isohyets (precipitation).
