Networking Makes Sense

Why Networking Makes Sense

It's well worth your time to learn about networking now. You're already doing it day-to-day, and I'd like to suggest

ways in which you can get better. What is networking anyway? It's hard to define. But easy to describe: Networking is the process of introducing and getting introduced. Networking happens in the classroom. At parties. At conventions. In grocery stores. At charity functions. In sports. At work. And over food. Networking is enjoying people. Getting to know them. Appreciating them. Sharing yourself with them. Networking is talking about what you can do for others. Business is part of this process, but not the entirety of it. Networking is often pro-active and purposive. You are looking to meet certain people in order to help develop business. Networking takes time. All relationships take time.

Accountants have to be natural networkers. Almost every phase of accounting work involves the need to meet people and develop relations with them. This may involve something as simple as finding someone within your company who can help you with technical tax questions. Or as complex as setting up a series of seminars to attract potential clients interested in the latest big accounting development in oil & gas.

I would add that one of the great benefits of being a good net- worker is career- related. Your ability to change jobs and progress inside a

company depends to a great degree on the willingness of others to help you. And, getting that help depends on how well others know you and know others whom you know.

I would suggest that one of the first truly important networking  exercises you can pursue involves your future job search. I recommend networking with people at firms you are interested in working for well ahead of time. It really helps to have others batting for you and educating you about the profession. If you indicate in an interview that you already know someone at a firm your chances of landing a position will go up dramatically.
