Male, Female, and Beyond

In fruit flies, humans, and many other animal species, females have two X chromosomes and males have one X and one Y chromosome. In other kinds of organisms, however, different genetic mechanisms may determine the sex of the individual. Sometimes sex is determined by different complements of the X and Y chromosomes. In other organisms, the sex of an individual may be determined by factors in the environment in which it lives.
