    Psychosurgery can be very beneficial when specific, small areas of the brain are removed, but the "Lobotomy" is a sledge hammer approach to psychosurgery that has a long and sordid history. This site discusses this procedure in detail, and even discusses the most famous lobotomy of all, that of Frances Farmer.  (See page 570 in Psychology in Action, 5e for a much briefer discussion of the lobotomy, and page 541 in Psychology in Action, 5e, for the story of Frances Farmer.)
