Shingo Prize Announces 2001 Lean Research and Applied Programs in Manufacturing Award Recipients

The Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing research selection committee announced the 13th annual Shingo Prize Research and Applied Programs Award recipients. Among those selected were Stephen A. Ruffa and Michael J. Perozziello, authors of Breaking the Cost Barrier: A Proven Approach to Managing and Implementing Lean.

Breaking the Cost Barrier presents a new analysis of lessons in implementing lean manufacturing techniques within one of today's most challenging business environments, the aircraft industry. The book highlights the industry from its early reliance on craftsmen, to the rise of mass production, to the lean initiatives of today. Ruffa and Perozziello present lessons from across the industry, offering suggestions to manufacturers on how they can overcome seemingly overwhelming barriers to productivity.

The Shingo Prize Research Awards recognize publications or applications that broaden the body of knowledge in new theory and application of lean manufacturing practices. The four award categories are: unpublished journal articles, published journal articles, book/monographs and applied application or multimedia.

"These authors are a driving force in helping companies implement and achieve lean manufacturing practices," said Ross Robson, Executive Director of the Shingo Prize. "In fact, several of this year's Shingo Prize winners in the Large Manufacturers category (recipients were announced April 26, 2001) have mentioned to me that these titles are among their recent readings."

The awards ceremony for all Shingo Prize Research and Manufacturers award recipients was held June 7 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Dearborn, Mich. The ceremony is part of the annual Shingo Conference.

The Shingo Prize Research Awards, administered by The College of Business, Utah State University, are given annually in conjunction with the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing. Referred to by Business Week magazine "…the Nobel prize of manufacturing…" (May 15, 2000), the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing is given annually to manufacturers in the United States, Canada and Mexico who deliver world-class performance through lean principles and techniques in core manufacturing and business processes.
