Chapter Links links to data from national, state, and institutional networks, as well as to case studies and related topical information on a chapter by chapter basis. Weve included a wide variety of sources in an attempt to most efficiently assist both instructors and students while using the third edition of Landscape Planning: Environmental Applications. Weve found that instructors build exercises or studio sets based on familiar problems with a distinct local and/or regional geographic focus. This finding, combined with the broad range of disciplines and interests represented by this books user community, has lead us to the following sites. You will see that they are umbrellas for a vast amount of county and local data.
The size, complexity, and potential utility of the 100 or so Web sites weve listed here vary enormously. Some qualify as megasites because they are actually vast networks with branches leading to many large data files. Chief among the megasites is the U.S. Geological Survey which includes links to the EROS Data Center (for maps and remote sensing data and images), the National Landslide Information Center, case studies (such as the Ozark Stream Geomorphology Project), and the Surface Water Data Revival System, to name a few. The U.S. Department of Energys Office of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds also qualify as megasites.
Another class of site found here could be called a referral site. These mainly offer references to other sites and are usually provided by universities, governmental agencies, laboratories, and professional organizations. A third, and fairly large, class of Web sites found here is represented by case studies. These include reports on projects, research programs, various field and laboratory experiences, or events such as a major flood. Reports on the 1997 Fargo Flood (North Dakota State University) and domestic wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (North Carolina State University) are examples of this.
