 Move over Ma Bell,
it's the Internet for long distance...

It makes no sense. Why pay hundreds of dollars each month in long distance charges when you can get it all for free—over the Internet? For many individuals and organizations that have high long distances phone bills, the Internet has become their carrier of choice. Despite a lack of standards, significant regulatory hurdles, and inherent technical quality limitations, Internet-based telephony is really taking off.

Datamation’s Steven Levy explains the pros and cons of phoning on the Net in The rise of Internet telephony. A new technique that let’s you reach ordinary telephones from the Internet is described in the Business Week article, Internet Phoning That Really Rings True. For the latest information on the rapidly changing new field of Internet telephony, check out Voice On The Net, an industry consortium Web site.

Exercises

  1. Enter VeriFone’s Web site. Find their products for the Internet. E-mail some queries regarding their products.
  2. Wireless communication has many advantages, and it is now being used to access the Internet/Intranet. Surf the Internet to find the newest developments in this area. Prepare a managerially-oriented one-page report. Identify a newsgroup and find current issues.
  3. Surf the Internet to find new applications for GPS (try Motorola’s Web site). How can the combination of GPS and Internet be helpful to electronic commerce?
  4. Electronic funds transfer (EFT) is used extensively nationally and internationally. Surf the Internet to find how EFT is done. Also, investigate if the Internet itself is used for electronic funds transfer.(See Business Credit, April 1996).
