Every year the Institute of Petroleum publishes a compilation of IP, British and International standards as well as European norms. All of these are based on both traditional and modern instrumentation techniques. These Standard Methods are an essential part of any quality control regime. They are also necessary for national and international trading of petroleum and related products. This edition contains all the test methods called up in the specifications for European and National Automotive Fuels, International Marine Fuels and National Industrial Fuels and Lubricants. It also contains many other standard test methods required for quality control and custody transfer/quantity control.
The 2001 edition contains over:

- 22 proposed methods
Amendments and additions to the 2000 edition include:
- 11 new full test methods
- 1 new proposed test method
- 11 new ISO Standards and European norms
- 15 IP test methods with significant changes and many have minor changes
