Cassandra L. Smith is Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Biology and
Pharmacology and Deputy Director for the Center for Advanced
Biotechnology at Boston University. She received her Ph. D. in
genetics at Texas A and M University in 1973. She has served on the
faculty of Columbia University and the University of California at
Berkeley and was Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory prior to joining the faculty at Boston
University. Currently, she is Chief Editor of Biomolecular Engineering
published by Elsevier in the Netherlands, founder of Daxx, a start up
biotechnology company based on a recently developed DNA fingerprint
technology. She is the co-author of a recent published textbook
entitled "Genomics: The science and technology behind the human
genome project" Her current research interest are focused on the
development and application of comparative genomic method for studying
DNA changes in twins both as an alternative to positional cloning
experiments for disease genes and to understand development and ageing.
Another focus is on targeting cells, e. g. tumour cells, in vivo using
DNA mimics of antibodies and designing and constructing DNA and protein
scaffolds for a variety of molecular engineering type purposes.
