
O. David Sparkman is a consultant in mass spectrometry and an instructor of mass spectrometry short courses for the
American Chemical Society (ACS). He has been active in the field of analytical chemistry since 1964 and has been
actively involved with mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques in mass spectrometry since that time. Prior to
becoming a consultant, he spent several years in the commercial mass spectrometry manufacturing field holding
positions in product development, applications research, and marketing. His current consulting includes work with
the National Institute of Standards and Technology on search algorithms for mass spectral databases and the use of
databases of electron ionization spectra in the interpretation of spectra obtained through collisionally activated
dissociation. He currently is the director of six different ACS courses in mass spectrometry, holds positions on
the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the HD Science GC/MS
Update – Part B, is on the continuing education committee of the ACS, and is a frequent contributor of conference
and book reviews to the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. He also has a number of clients
among research organizations conducting applications and instrument development research in mass spectrometry, as
well as consulting for instrument manufacturers.
