Elias S. W. Shiu is Principal Financial Group Foundation Professor of Actuarial Science in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, The University of Iowa, U.S.A., and visiting Chair Professor of Actuarial Science in the Department of Applied Mathematics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China. He received a Ph. D. in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1975. From 1976 to 1991, he was a professor of actuarial science at the University of Manitoba and a consultant for the Great-West Life Assurance Company in Winnipeg, Canada. He is an Editor of the journal Insurance: Mathematics and Economics and a Co-Editor of the North American Actuarial Journal.
