Slide 10: In the northern forest/prairie transition zone grasslands and pastures are largely maintained due to human interference, e.g.for dairy production.  This aerial view of a rural area near Whitelaw, Wisconsin (southeast of Greenbay) is typical of the region. Notice that it is a mixed-forest grassland mosaic with most lakes and rivers bordered by mixed deciduous forests.  Many landform features and the soil-water conditions reflect past glaciation as well as human management of the ecosystem.
