Slide 23: On the humid boundary of the Great Plains in Texas, and extending toward the Gulf Coast, the vegetation becomes taller and the cover type is frequently a more dense oak/juniper savanna woodland.  This is especially true on the Edwards Plateau which is also referred to as the Texas Hill Country.  Underlying this old and complex sedimentary rock system is one of America's most productive and unique aquifers--the Edward's aquifer.  Learn more about this aquifer in Tour II or go directly to the Edward's Aquifer page. On slopes leading down to the Lower Rio Grande plain, the ceniza shrub dominates. Live oak forest is found along the Gulf Coast. A unique semiarid forest consisting of small trees and shrubs with Mexican affinities occupies the Rio Grande delta. The endangered sabal palm is native here.
