Our Approach to ESG

Our ESG strategy is guided by:

  • Our commitment to being a company that continues to make people proud through our culture, operations, and guiding principles.
  • Our responsibility to lead global change on issues where we have expertise through our resources, reputation, and reach—elevating evidence-based knowledge on environmental and social topics shaping society.

As a founding signatory for Publishing Declares and members of the UN Global Compact and SDG Publishers Compact, there are three UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that underpin our ESG strategy: quality education, reducing inequalities, and climate action. Quality Education and Learning

We believe everyone should have access to quality education, and we promote education equity through our products, initiatives, and corporate awards. We’re lowering the barriers to access information by making scientific and scholarly content more open and accessible to the world and expanding the reach of research low- or middle-income countries to help bridge the gaps between education and employment.

Inclusion and Belonging

As a purpose-driven organization, we work to foster a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world—within our workplace and beyond. We’re focused on growing our own inclusive culture through our 10 Employee Resource Groups (and counting!), joining industry- and society-wide DEI pledges like CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, showcasing research to advance equity through our RISE collections, and partnering with organizations that expand our equitable hiring practices. 

The UK GPG is the difference in average earnings between men and women across an organization, irrespective of the job they do, level, or seniority. While the gender pay gap is an important metric and a contributing factor to our global DEI initiatives and actions, we want to emphasize that the gender pay gap is not the same as gender pay equity. We are committed to paying equitably in each country across our organization.

Climate Action

We believe that environmental responsibility and business objectives are fundamentally connected and essential to our operations. We’ve set a science-based target to achieve net-zero by 2040. To realize this goal, we are taking steps to reduce our environmental impact by building and executing climate action plans. In our products and services, we are improving the world’s climate knowledge in a range of ways, including our publication of 130 journals and partnerships with 26 scientific societies focused on advancing climate science.
