Sustainability is not a new concept at Wiley, a company that has prospered for more than 200 years. Rather, throughout our long history we have acknowledged that the rights and privileges of citizenship go hand-in-hand with responsibility to our local and global communities. Our companywide Corporate Citizenship efforts formally address the key social, economic, and environmental challenges we face in our business. Wiley’s activities and achievements in the areas of workplace, environment, and community provide evidence of our commitment to responsible citizenship and represent a strong foundation on which we will continue to build. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Wiley offers compensation and benefits that are competitive, equitable, and meet the needs of our diverse workforce. Wiley provides colleagues with benefits to help them balance work responsibilities with personal and family concerns, enrich their personal lives, and ensure they find their time at Wiley both personally and professionally rewarding.
All Wiley colleagues are eligible to participate in an annual incentive plan. Incentives are awarded based on business and individual performance. By sharing financial rewards, Wiley reinforces the integral role colleagues throughout the organization play in the company’s success.
Features of our benefits program include medical, dental, and vision coverage; retirement savings; life insurance for spouses and dependents; employee assistance programs; flexible spending accounts; generous paid time off; and long-term care insurance. GENDER PAY GAP REPORT
Wiley welcomes the UK Government’s introduction of the Gender Pay Gap reporting legislation
As a global research and learning company with employees in over 30 countries, Wiley is dedicated to incorporating diversity and inclusion and promoting equal opportunity for all. We welcome the UK Government’s introduction of the Gender Pay Gap reporting legislation. This Report covers only our UK employees, and we are therefore reporting only on a subsection of Wiley’s global business. Click here to read the report.
What is the UK Gender Pay Gap?
The Gender Pay Gap gives insight to the gender pay balance within an organization by showing the difference in average earnings between men and women across the organisation. The regulation requires UK employers with 250 or more employees to report annually to the UK Government, and make publicly available their gender pay gap metrics for both pay and bonuses. The gender pay gap is not the same as equal pay. The gender pay gap is a simple average figure for all employees within the UK workforce, irrespective of the job that they do. The Report is based on the hourly pay of all employees in the April 2017 payroll, as well as bonuses paid between 6 April 2016 and 5 April 2017.
Wiley invests in professional development and training programs, initiatives, and benefits to help colleagues develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies essential for driving performance and helping them to grow professionally.
For example, position shadowing permits colleagues, on a part-time basis, to observe colleagues in other functions or business units to better understand how they operate. And position rotation allows colleagues to temporarily assume full-time responsibility for open positions in different business locations around the world.
In 2016, we introduced the Steve Smith Award which honors the legacy of Wiley's former president and CEO and his commitment to creating a stronger future for the company. The annual award offers colleagues an international leadership development opportunity including formal education, overseas assignments, and practical leadership challenges.
Wiley honors colleagues who have made significant contributions to the company's success with semi-annual Pacesetter Awards, which recognize individuals and teams who excel at operational excellence and demonstrate our values of People, Partnerships and Performance. In recognition of top performance, outstanding efforts and achievements, colleagues may also be nominated for monetary Spot Bonus Awards on an ad-hoc basis and Performance Awards each year.
Wiley recognizes the challenge of balancing a professional career with family and personal responsibilities. We offer flexibility and a range of benefits and services geared toward helping colleagues achieve a healthy balance between work and life.
Alternative work arrangements are supported where appropriate. These may include telecommuting, off-site offices, position sharing, compressed work weeks, and a formal flextime policy. Colleagues may also be granted unpaid personal leaves of absence for education, public service, or to care for an ill or disabled family member.
In addition, Wiley offers a variety of special benefits to enrich colleagues’ experiences and to promote enjoyment and comfort at work. These include company-sponsored social events, 50% discount on all Wiley products and free or discounted admission to specific cultural and charitable organizations.
As a company that operates in and serves countries around the world, we recognize our responsibility to do so in a manner that respects our environment. We take special care to manage the short- and long-term impact of our daily operations on our neighbors and the world. In the end, we strive to make sustainable decisions that are good for business, good for our customers, and good for the environment.
As a publishing company, paper is at the heart of what we do. Our practices and policies reflect our commitment to educating ourselves about, and ultimately selecting, the most environmentally and business-friendly papers. We recognize our responsibility to select partners that utilize the highest standards of sustainable, clean, and efficient paper production. With guidance from stakeholders, industry trade associations, and third-party certifiers, Wiley has established company-wide paper procurement and ethical supply chain policies.
We are committed to reducing—rather than just offsetting—our carbon footprint. New digital initiatives—which allow for smaller print runs and better management of inventory—not only are in line with Wiley’s business strategy but also have enabled us to realize tangible improvements to our environmental impact.
Wiley's culture supports colleagues who accept individual responsibility for the environment. Colleagues at several offices have launched independent “Green Room” initiatives to educate one another about environmental issues and promote widespread awareness about timely and relevant issues. The proliferation of locally driven grass-roots activity shows the depth of Wiley's commitment to the environment and highlights the many ways in which each of us can do our part.
Wiley encourages sustainable forms of travel where possible and provides services and resources to support colleagues who seek alternative methods of commuting. Wiley’s flexible work arrangements, transportation benefits program, and facility choices further reduce the environmental impact of our transportation use. A regular survey of Wiley colleagues helps us evaluate and measure our efforts in this area.
Ensuring Wiley’s publications comply with government regulations on children's safety is important to us. We have worked closely with the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and our vendors so we fully understand and are compliant with new regulations.
“The belief that success begets responsibility is embedded in Wiley’s DNA. Our Matching Gift program, for example, goes back well over 60 years. Today, we have expanded our efforts to share our success through donations, scholarships, volunteerism, and active community engagement.”
- Deborah E. Wiley, Chairman, The Wiley Foundation
As a truly global company with core businesses serving markets around the world and colleagues scattered throughout offices worldwide, Wiley strives to be a good neighbor. We place great value on giving back to the communities in which we live and work, as well as those we serve.
Wiley’s corporate philanthropy program helps improve the quality of life for those living in our local and global communities. We contribute by supporting non-profit cultural, educational, health, environmental, social service, and publishing-industry related organizations. Whether granting direct gifts, matching the funds and volunteer hours our colleagues so generously give, or mobilizing in times of crisis, Wiley supports organizations that not only have meaning in our colleagues’ lives but also strive to make the world a better place.
Wiley contributes financially to assist communities around the world in the wake of crises. Responding to the Nepal earthquake in 2015, Wiley matched colleague donations and contributed $60,000 to the Mitrataa Foundation, our long-standing partner charity in Nepal. With the funds, Mitrataa, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to empower underprivileged children through education, were able to resume educational programs as well as engage in sustainable development efforts to help rebuild and improve living conditions in communities severely affected by the earthquake. Wiley regularly makes significant cash and in-kind donations in support of not-for-profit organizations, including educational charities such as Mitrataa, humanitarian organizations, and academic institutions and societies.
One of the most important ways Wiley contributes is by sharing scientific and scholarly content with those in greatest need. We work with several organizations to extend the reach of critical information to medical professionals, emergency workers, government officials, and academic communities around the world. Our partnerships and efforts in content access highlight our continued emphasis on improving lives through the provision of content. Wiley is a founding member of Research4Life and publishes The Cochrane Collaboration’s “Cochrane Reviews”.
AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Wiley has established and supports numerous awards and scholarships to recognize and foster ongoing excellence in scientific achievement and discovery. We acknowledge the important contributions of prominent researchers, scientists, scholars, and professionals not only to Wiley’s success but also, and most importantly, to the advancement of knowledge and understanding around the world.
The Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences, awarded by The Wiley Foundation, recognizes breakthrough research in pure or applied life science research that is distinguished by its excellence, originality, and impact on our understanding of biological systems and processes.
Wiley also recognizes early career researchers, educators and librarians who are paving the way in their field of work and making a difference in the world. The APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE Prize), sponsored jointly by Wiley and Elsevier, recognizes young scientists who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in scientific research, as evidenced by scholarly publication, and cooperation with scientists from other Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies.
Wiley’s colleagues are engaged and active members of the communities in which they live and work, and our global locations enable us to have a far-reaching and wide-ranging impact. Whether volunteering to read to children, donating blood, organizing bake sales, or collecting school supplies for children in need, Wiley colleagues give of their own time and money to help our neighbors around the world. Our collaborative efforts highlight our firm belief that we—individually and collectively—are responsible to the communities in which we live and work, and to the global communities we serve.
Wiley does not consider unsolicited grant requests from individuals, organizations, or institutions, but rather, makes contributions to non-profit organizations that have meaning in the lives of Wiley colleagues. Organizations must meet certain eligibility requirements to be considered.
As the world's leading publisher of scholarly, technical, and medical journals for societies and their memberships, we are committed to promoting and practicing the highest standards of ethical publishing across all Wiley journals.
Wiley's Best Practice Guidelines on Publication Ethics encourages integrity in research, writing, and peer review by presenting the gold-standard for editorial processes across the scholarly disciplines.
As the introduction to Best Practice Guidelines on Publication Ethics says:
Editors trust peer reviewers to provide fair assessments, authors trust editors to select appropriate peer reviewers, and readers put their trust in the peer-review process. . . . Good decisions and strong editorial processes . . . will foster a sustainable and efficient publishing system, which will benefit academic societies, journal editors, authors, research funders, readers, and publishers.
Visit our Author Services website to read the guidelines.
TRANSFER CODE OF PRACTICE
Wiley endorses the latest version of the NISO Transfer Code of Practice. The Code outlines “best practice” for the transfer of digital content files, subscription lists, and other journal assets during a change in publisher, publishing platform, or owner.
As an endorsing publisher and using commercially-reasonable efforts, Wiley commits to meeting the standards of the code in all journal transfers we are involved.
THE WILEY FOUNDATION
We established The Wiley Foundation in 2001 to recognize and foster ongoing excellence in scientific achievement and discovery. The Wiley Foundation serves as the endowing body to support the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences, an annual prize to celebrate research that champions novel approaches and challenges accepted thinking in the biomedical sciences.
