Optical communications is readily adopted today in mobile systems and wide area networks to provide an ultra-high capacity link to transport huge tidal waves of information, and it is clear that any integrated 5G system will harness an optical core to route data in a cost-effective manner, raising highly significant challenges on how wireless can coexist with optical to provide a seamless end-to-end communication path.


This book targets enabling technologies for 5G networks and services, and in particular offers a new insight into a so called ubiquitous and agile 5G-core system, managing an ecosystem of mixed and multiple access network communications with a key focus on the optical-wireless convergence. The use-cases to be considered include indoor communications such as fibre, Fiber–Wireless (FiWi), light fidelity consortium (LiFi) and device-to device communication.
