Description

High-leverage practices (HLPs) are basic teaching tasks that are essential for beginners because they are used with high frequency from a teacher’s first day on the job and cannot be delegated to another teacher or school professional. They are critical to helping all pupils learn worthwhile content and consequential for the kind of social, emotional, and intellectual experiences students have in school, and are generative of future learning for the teacher. They include some tasks that nearly every teacher anywhere has to carry out, such as setting learning goals and designing assessments, and others that are particular to our vision of good teaching, such as leading group discussions and setting up and managing small group work. All of them are useful across a broad range of subject areas, grade levels, and teaching contexts.
