The phone book of the Internet. Four11 is used to find the e-mail addresses of people online. It doesn't have *everyone,* but there are millions of people in its database.
Internet Address Finder

A large Internet white pages. You must provide a last name, or you can do a "reverse search" if you know the exact e-mail address. Provides ten matches per screen. Based mostly on names lifted from Usenet postings.
InfoSpace

This incredible people finder includes white pages (people) yellow pages (businesses) and blue pages (government) for the U.S. and Canada. Provides e-mail addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and maps. Simply stunning!
College Press Network

Here's a nifty list of college newspaper web sites -- very helpful if you are promoting to the college market. Unfortunately, you'll have to visit the web sites to find the e-mail addresses of editors or webmasters.

Subscription-based service that lets you search for media contacts. Use the free trial and see what you think. I didn't find as many contacts as I hoped, but the ones I found were very high quality, complete with personal e-mail addresses.

A resource site for journalists on the Internet with some useful materials for publicists. In particular, check out the "Media in Cyberspace" study, conducted by Middleberg + Associates, which contains data about how the press uses the net.
