Welcome

Welcome to the companion site for Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment. Water and Sanitation-Related Diseases and the Changing Environment: Challenges, Interventions, and Preventive Measures.

Original chapters for the books Water and Sanitation-Related Diseases and the Changing Environment: Challenges, Interventions, and Preventive Measures were written by 75 experts, the 2nd Edition, with the word Changing added to the original title. The 2nd Edition manuscript is being prepared for publication. The books were conceived, composed, and Edited by Janine M. H. Selendy.

Several authors for both editions were joined by new or additional co-authors for the 2nd Edition. The books were written by authorities from the fields of climate change, epidemiology, environmental health, environmental engineering, global health, medicine, medical anthropology, nutrition, population, and public health. Many chapters stand as they are in First Edition to which readers are referred and which are not included in the 2nd Edition.

Among the new chapters for the 2nd Edition are, “The Human Right to Sanitation” by Anoop Jain and Jay P. Graham, “Water, Food, and the Environment” by Robert Wyman and Guigui Yao “Food Systems and Nutrition, In The Context of Climate Change” by José Graziano da Silva, “Other Water Pollutants: Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria” by Rochelle Rainey, “Ecosystem Health as The Basis for Human Health” by Tom Barker and Jane Fisher, “Addressing the Nexus of Water, Sanitation, Health and Climate Change Through Multistakeholder Partnerships” by Nikhil Chandavarkar, and “Catalyzing Rural Sanitation at Scale: Lessons Learned from The Global Sanitation Fund” by Carolien Van der Voorden and Patrick England.

As Jens Aagaard-Hansen and Janine Selendy write in the 2nd Edition “Introduction,” this volume “presents an interdisciplinary picture of the conditions responsible for water and sanitation-related diseases, the pathogens, vectors and their biology, morbidity and mortality resulting from lack of safe water and sanitation, distribution of these diseases and the conditions that must be met to reduce or eradicate them. Augmenting coverage in the First Edition, this book continues to cover access to and maintenance of clean water, and guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater and examples of solutions.”

“The broad extent, variety, and ramifications of changing environmental factors are covered in many chapters throughout this book. These concerns are a major focus in updated and revised chapters from the First Edition and new chapters introduced in the Second Edition.”
